The story

American sports cars, day and night

This sports car series races in the United States and Canada. It began in 2014, when the Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series merged into one championship.

Four classes share the track, from hybrid prototypes to GT3 cars. Rounds run from sprint races up to the 24 Hours of Daytona. The five longest races also count for a separate endurance cup.

GTP11 full-season cars

The top class. Hybrid prototypes from Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac and Porsche. It replaced the older DPi class in 2023. The rules are shared with the WEC's Hypercar class, so some cars race in both.

LMP212 full-season cars

Prototypes that are all the same: an Oreca 07 chassis with a Gibson V8 engine. Teams compete on driving and strategy, not on the car.

GTD Pro8 full-season cars

GT3 cars, which are race versions of road cars. Teams may choose any drivers, so the line-ups are often full professionals.

GTD14 full-season cars

The same GT3 cars as GTD Pro. Each crew must include at least one driver rated Silver or Bronze, so amateurs share the car with professionals.

All 11 rounds of the 2026 season have been held. The season finished with Petit Le Mans on 3 October.

Good to know

  • Five long races

    A separate endurance cup counts five races: Daytona 24 hours, Sebring 12 hours, Watkins Glen 6 hours, Road America 6 hours and Petit Le Mans 10 hours.

  • Not every class, every race

    Some rounds leave classes out. In 2026 Long Beach was for GTP and GTD only, and the Virginia round was for the two GT classes only.

  • Born from a merger

    The Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series joined in 2014. The 24 Hours of Daytona opened that first season.

Next year

2027: 11 rounds

IMSA announced the 2027 calendar on 19 March 2026. It has 11 rounds at the same 11 venues. Acura has said it will pause its factory GTP programme after the 2026 season.
