The story

Electric racing in city centres

Formula E held its first race in Beijing in September 2014. The cars are all-electric. Since 2020–21 it has been an FIA World Championship. Many rounds run on temporary street circuits in city centres.

Season 13 (2026–27) starts the Gen4 era. The new car has up to 600 kW in Attack Mode and all-wheel drive at all times. Double-header weekends now have two different races: a 30-minute E-Prix Unleashed and a 45-minute E-Prix.

The carsGen4 car

Every team races the Gen4 car. Each maker builds its own powertrain, and some teams buy one from a maker. Race mode gives 450 kW. Attack Mode gives up to 600 kW.

Good to know

  • Seasons span two years

A season starts near the end of one year and ends the next summer. Season 13 runs from December 2026 to July 2027.

  • Attack Mode

Drivers leave the racing line through an activation zone to get extra power for a set time. The Gen4 car gives up to 600 kW in Attack Mode.

  • Two kinds of race

On double-header weekends the 30-minute E-Prix Unleashed has no mandatory pit stop. The 45-minute E-Prix has one.
