The story

The third step to F1

The FIA Formula 3 Championship began in 2019. It was created by merging the GP3 Series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. It races only on Formula 1 weekends.

It is the first step on the FIA ladder: Formula 3, then Formula 2, then Formula 1.

Ten rounds were planned. The Bahrain round in April was cancelled and no replacement was added, so nine remain. Every round runs on a Formula 1 weekend.

Good to know

  • Reversed-grid sprint

Saturday's sprint race starts with the top twelve qualifiers in reverse order. Sunday's feature race is the main one.

  • Only on F1 weekends

F3 does not run on its own. It races on Formula 1 weekends, alongside Formula 2, and all nine 2026 rounds follow that rule.

  • Two feature races in Madrid

The season finale in Madrid had a Saturday and a Sunday feature race, as well as the sprint.
