The story

From 1950 to a new era

Formula 1 is the top class of single-seater racing, and the FIA governs it. The World Championship began in 1950, when the British Grand Prix at Silverstone was the first round.

2026 brings new cars and power units. Power is split about half and half between the engine and electricity, and the fuel is fully sustainable. The DRS overtaking flap is replaced by movable wings and an Overtake Mode. Cadillac joins as an 11th team, and Audi as an engine maker.

The machines

The cars22 cars

Single-seater racing cars. Each of the 11 teams enters two. For 2026 the cars are narrower, with a shorter wheelbase and movable front and rear wings.

Good to know

  • Six sprint weekends

Six rounds in 2026 add a short Sprint race to the weekend: China, Miami, Canada, Britain, the Netherlands and Singapore.

  • A new circuit in Madrid

The Spanish Grand Prix moved to Madring, a new circuit in Madrid. Barcelona-Catalunya also hosts a round in 2026, under its own name.

  • Baku races on Saturday

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is on Saturday 26 September, a first for that race, because Sunday is Remembrance Day in Azerbaijan.
