The story

Racing the clock on rally roads

The World Rally Championship began in 1973, and the Rallye Monte-Carlo was its first round. At first only manufacturers had a title. Drivers got their own title in 1979.

A rally is not a race around one circuit. Crews are timed over special stages, and each car carries a driver and a co-driver. Between stages the teams work on the cars at a service park. A rally runs from Thursday to Sunday.

Good to know

  • Snow, gravel and tarmac

The surface changes from round to round: snow in Sweden, gravel in Kenya and Finland, tarmac in Croatia and Japan. Monte-Carlo mixes tarmac with ice and snow.

  • The Power Stage ends it

A rally finishes with the Power Stage. It is the last stage, run on Sunday.

  • A bigger calendar in 2027

The 2027 season has 15 rounds, the most since 2008. The United States and Scotland are back, and the Italian round moves to Rome.

Next year

2027: 15 rounds

Fifteen rounds, the most since 2008. The United States and Scotland join the list, Italy moves to Rome and Rally Portugal is not on it.
