The story

Open-wheel racing on every surface

The series began in 1996 as the Indy Racing League, set up by Tony George after a split in American open-wheel racing. It raced on ovals only at first. In 2008 the rival Champ Car series was folded in, and one championship remained.

Today it visits ovals, permanent road courses and temporary street circuits, six of each in 2026. The Indianapolis 500 in May is the best-known round. Every team uses the same Dallara chassis and Firestone tyres. The engine, from Chevrolet or Honda, is the big difference.

The machines

The cars25 cars

One chassis, the Dallara DW12, has been used since 2012. Each car has a 2.2-litre twin-turbo V6 from Chevrolet or Honda, with a hybrid unit added in 2024. A new car, the IR-28, is due in 2028.

Good to know

  • Hybrid power since 2024

The hybrid unit made its racing debut at Mid-Ohio in July 2024. It adds an electric boost for overtaking, and there is no limit on how much it can be used in a race.

  • New places in 2026

Arlington and Markham are new street circuits, and Phoenix returned after eight years away. Washington, D.C. joined the calendar later.

  • A new car in 2028

The IR-28 was unveiled in July 2026. Dallara builds it, and Chevrolet and Honda supply the 2.4-litre hybrid V6 engines.
